“A Tudor Revival in San Francisco gets a kaleidoscopic remake from maximalism’s reigning queen, Summer Thornton.”

Overlooking Presidio Park in San Francisco, this 1912 Tudor Revival home was renovated in collaboration with Sutro Architects to reflect the art-loving client’s bold taste and extensive collection.

A standout in the San Francisco interior design landscape, the project layers classical architectural details with vibrant color, intricate wallcoverings, and statement-making materials—from a malachite-slabbed bathroom to a hand-painted foyer and a tented game room in deep indigo.

“It starts in the entry, where a cove ceiling shimmers in aluminum leaf accented by hand-painted ribbon details."

Every space was tailored to feel both glamorous and personal, creating a home that is as much a work of art as the pieces it displays.

“The 1912 Tudor Revival house appears traditional, but inside it is a kaleidoscope of jewel tones, chinoiserie, contemporary art, metallic surfaces, and high-gloss finishes.”

“Around the bend is one of Annie Morris’s iconic Stack sculptures, eight candy-colored spheres arranged in a column. A pale pink lacquered stairwell amplifies the drama, catching and reflecting light at the heart of the home.”

“Since founding her firm in 2007, the Chicago-based Elle Decor A-List designer has become the go-to for clients who don’t care what the neighbors think. This project, her first in San Francisco, reveals its exuberance the moment you step inside.”

“In the living room, mauve lacquer walls meet cinnamon trim in a calculated clash. A moss-green sofa snakes through the space, designed for salon-style gatherings.”

“I’m not afraid to go too far.

SUMMER THORNTON

“Green is a Thornton signature; its most opulent expression here is in the primary bathroom, which is wrapped in dark green Italian stone that reminds Sanner of her grandmother’s malachite boxes.”

“Meanwhile, the fantastical game room—with tiger prints and midnight-blue forest murals—was prompted by a request from the couple’s 10-year-old son: ‘Make it more fun, please!’”
