Interior Architecture Assistant / Interior Design Assistant

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Principal & Designers in overseeing large-scale, long-term design projects from concept through installation for high-end residential, hospitality, and boutique commercial projects
  • Assist in the drawing & development of comprehensive design plans & construction drawing sets including sourcing, floorplans, elevations, etc
  • Collaborate with outside consultants and project partners including Architects, General Contractors, Craftsmen, & more
  • Drive project progress through timeline management and vendor expediting
  • Maintain strong relationships and communication with clients and vendors
  • Prepare proposals for product & labor
  • Prepare materials & organize presentations before client meetings
  • Interpret and help bring-to-life the design vision for clients
  • Design custom furniture, cabinetry, textiles and more to achieve the design vision
  • Create finish schedules and coordinate construction with architects/builders
  • Contact vendors for pricing & samples
  • Organize materials for client presentations
  • Accessorize & style rooms for photo shoots
  • Marketing Assistance
  • Office tidying & organization as well as resource library maintenance/organization
  • Pick-up and return unused product & samples as required
  • May require up to 10% travel out-of-state
  • Seamlessly transition orders and contractor-management to Project Management group at firm

Key Qualifications & Skills:

  • 1-5 years professional experience in related field (interior design, architecture, product/furniture design, textile design, hospitality design, etc)
  • Bachelors degree (or Masters) in Interior Design, Architecture, Industrial Design, or related field
  • Impeccable design taste and alignment with Principal’s design style and philosophies
  • Strong 2D AUTOCAD & Photoshop experience mandatory. Rendering, hand-sketching, and 3D skills a plus but not required
  • Ability to problem-solve, try new things, and seek solutions with limited supervisor direction
  • Strong multi-tasking skills and ability to manage multiple projects with varying timelines and deliverables at once
  • Teamwork & collaboration-minded
  • Proactive self-starter – shows both initiative and detailed follow-through/completion
  • Valid driver’s license & transportation (& must be comfortable driving in Chicago)
  • Strong attention to detail & strong organizational skills
  • Studio Webware experience a plus
  • Positive and fun, team player, utmost integrity, honesty, & no-drama/ego attitude a necessity

Design / Architecture Intern

Summer Thornton Design offers internship opportunities for the best & brightest on an as-needed basis throughout the year. Many of our team members start as interns and have the opportunity to join the team at the end of their internship. Also individuals considering career industry changes are possible candidates for an intern position.

Intern – Primary Responsibilities:

  • Creating Proposals for client meetings
  • Maintaining resource materials library
  • Pick-up & return product purchases
  • Create 2D CAD elevations & floor plans
  • Research interior design products
  • Contact vendors for pricing & product
  • Presentation materials prep
  • Office organization & tidying
  • Marketing support
  • Other tasks to help designers, project managers, architectural partners, and clients

Intern – Key Qualifications & Skills:

  • Interior Design or Architecture degree preferred (must be at least a Junior in college, though most interns have completed their undergraduate studies)
  • Ability to problem-solve and seek solutions with limited supervisor direction
  • Proactive self-starter – shows both initiative and detailed follow-through/completion
  • Valid driver’s license & vehicle (& be comfortable driving in Chicago)

Content Creator – Social & Digital Media

This position may be either a Full-time position (approx 40-hrs / week) or could be part-time (minimum 20-hrs / week) for the right candidate.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Must be a unique combination of right brain creative content maker & left brain organized content distributor as you create compelling content and ensure it is strategically & consistently deployed to facilitate brand growth & exposure
  • Personally manage the development of creative content across multiple platforms including but not limited to blog content, instagram, pinterest, e-mail newsletter, website, Houzz, popular external blogs, videos, etc
  • Create a content calendar & distribution schedule leveraging various platforms to maximize exposure for the Summer Thornton brand & personally deploy content against said schedule
  • Personally write & edit stories & produce photo/video imagery & content for the Summer Thornton Blog/Website
  • Oversee & manage content created by outside editors/writers and guest-posters to the Summer Thornton blog
  • Establish & build relationships with key influencers & brands in the social media space for cross-promotion, partnership, & brand-building opportunities
  • Develop strategies & tactics to maximize online sharing of Summer Thornton content through instagram, pinterest, Houzz, popular blogs, and more
  • Pursue opportunities for Summer to contribute to popular blogs and websites
  • Develop strategies & tactics to maximize followers & subscribers to Summer Thornton social media pages & newsletter
  • Create & deploy quarterly or semi-monthly e-newsletters highlighting key updates about the brand to followers
  • Add project imagery & press articles to website
  • Assist the Managing Director with other marketing activities including mailings, sourcing requests, photoshoots, editor quote & imagery requests, etc
  • Assist in the accessorizing & styling of rooms for photo shoots; and in some cases for smaller shoots personally facilitate the shoot unassisted
  • May require up to 10% travel out-of-state

Key Qualifications & Skills:

  • Minimum of 2+ years (ideally 6+) professional experience in related field (interior design, social media marketing, copy writing, art direction, journalism / editorial, architecture, etc)
  • Avid consumer of high quality editorial content & ideally a contributor (writer, photographer, editor) of such content
  • Bachelors degree in Creative Writing / Journalism, Fine Art (photography, graphic design, etc), Interior Design, Architecture, Marketing, or related field
  • Extensive knowledge & passion for the interior design & architecture industry including awareness of notable brands, leading designers & architects, design magazines & books, etc
  • Experience with wordpress, blogs, or other back-end CMS for creating online content
  • Impeccable design taste and alignment with Principal’s design style and philosophies
  • Basic photo-editing / photoshop skills.
  • Excellent writing skills & ability to write in varying voices.
  • Ability to problem-solve, try new things, and seek solutions with limited supervisor direction
